Background

Mr. Syed Afzal Hossain is an accomplished Barrister and Advocate of Supreme court of Bangladesh with more than twelve years of litigation experience and seven years of corporate experience. Among his areas of specialisation include banking and finance; telecommunication; corporate; VAT and tax; labour and employment; power and energy and so on. He has proficient expertise in both domestic and international commercial arbitrations. He attained his degree of LLB (Hons) from University of Leicester, UK, completed his Bar Vocational Course from the Inns of Court School of Law, London, UK and Postgraduate Diploma in Professional and Legal Skills from the City University, London, UK.

Career Highlights

Afzal appeared as an advocate before the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, District Courts of Dhaka and Chittagong, Labour Court of Dhaka and Trademark Tribunal of Bangladesh. In 2017, he began working for BAT Bangladesh as Commercial and Litigation Counsel. For his significant efforts in securing a favourable result in court for the company against the tax authority in relation to a VAT and SD claim of GBP 158 million, he was recognized and received the most prestigious award in BAT Bangladesh. He is also a two-time Steller Award winner and has won numerous Honour Club awards in the Company for a range of interdisciplinary initiatives.

Afzal has been entrusted with the role of Company Secretary & Senior Legal Counsel in BAT Bangladesh from 01 April 2024.

Prior to joining BAT Bangladesh, he worked as an advocate for:
